The Miss Winks Story- Part One
I’ve had a few people asking me recently about how Miss Winks came about and why I decided to start an online lingerie boutique. I realised that I have shared the journey’s of the amazing designers I stock on the blog, but not much about my own journey. I get a real kick out of interviewing inspiring business-women and delving into their passions and challenges so it felt about time that I put the Miss Winks story out there!
For those of you I have not met, I am the owner of Miss Winks. Sitting here writing, I cannot believe that Miss Winks is almost 18 months old. Like any 18 month old, Miss Winks is growing and blossoming in amazing ways, falling over and getting back up again and not without some teething issues! Running Miss Winks has been an amazing learning curve and every day I am in awe of the likes, followers, general interest and of course sales to my gorgeous customers. When I hear that women feel beautiful in these pieces, that they feel confident in the lingerie that they buy from Miss Winks, honestly my heart bursts.
So, how did Miss Winks come to be? Several years ago I owned a boutique that housed beautiful vintage and designer clothing and accessories. Gosh, I loved it. I am still totally obsessed with vintage. I began to stock some up-and-coming designers in the store and really wanted to support some independent lingerie brands but I found it really difficult to find any (these were the days before Instagram had really kicked off- gasp!). I had always had the idea of a boutique full of stunning lace bralettes and bodysuits and knickers that were unlike the usual mass-produced pieces on the high-street. Cue the Instagram age and low and behold I kept seeing these amazing new lingerie labels popping up but there was no one store that seemed to stock a varied range of the styles I liked! So when the time was right, I decided to do it myself…and here we are!
I also get asked this question a lot: Who is Miss Winks? Miss Winks is a reflection of myself and many of the women I know and admire. I certainly have a very feminine side- I love pretty things, creating and I rely heavily on my intuition. I'm kind and have an empathic nature and I feel and love deeply. Yet I am also pretty rebellious and was never an obedient child (or adult for that matter), constantly making mischief at school and getting in trouble! I have gone my own way and have never let anyone else's expectations sway me from my own purpose. This is Miss Winks and I think she is in all of us.
For the first six months of Miss Winks’ incarnation, I had a pop-up shop in Braddon in Canberra (under Browlab for those in the know!) which was lovely because I got to meet and chat with many of the customers who have now become regulars to the online boutique. It was a great opportunity for me to get the brand out there and build a customer base of beautiful women who could touch, see and try on the pieces. This was invaluable because it grew trust with Miss Winks and the collections. You only need to see any one of the pieces to know they are quality, well-made and not mass-produced knock-offs. All of the designers at Miss Winks are independent businesses hustling and building their brands with integrity. It’s always been important to me to support small business.
What has also been incredibly important to me is building confidence and promoting self-love through the things we wear. I have worked as a personal and fashion stylist for many years (I still often freelance) and have seen the effect of gorgeous lingerie on a woman first-hand! Your lingerie creates the canvas on which your clothes sit and it’s amazing what the right bra and knickers can do under an outfit, let alone when you take it off ( but that’s a whole other blog post). Wearing a pretty/ sexy/ sassy (let’s face it, even matching!) set under your clothes is an instant confidence boost. It’s the equivalent of wearing your old leggings with the hole in the crotch as opposed to a red slinky dress. Comfortable, yes. Does it make you feel like the goddess you are? Hell to the no.
Anywho, in the last 6 months I have really been focusing on the collections and making sure that the best pieces are available in the boutique. We have been working on some exciting collaborations and have some lovely press coming out soon that I can’t wait to share with you! If you have any suggestions about what you would like to see in the boutique, in the blog or would like to collaborate, get in touch at www.misswinks.com.
In the meantime, I want to say thank YOU for your support. I honestly do a happy dance whenever I see a comment, a like, a follow or your orders come through. It is all received with love and we hope we can give that right back.
Til soon, life’s too short to wear bad lingerie,
